Microsoft has launched a cloud computing business with the intent to make it’s ‘Azure’ platform the space industry’s standard choice. The operating system giant has created several technologies to assist the public and private sectors. The plan is to help them launch faster, while also making sure the companies can achieve their mission objectives. One of those new Microsoft technologies is the Azure Orbital Emulator, which conducts large-scale satellite constellation simulations.

Advanced satellite simulation systems

According to Remond, these satellite constellations need a lot of work before they launch. They ‘require precise planning and sophisticated AI-driven formation protocols.’ So, Microsoft’s cloud computing-based system will emulate these conditions. This will assist software developers. Microsoft using imagery gathered from satellites to create scenarios in real-time. Then, companies can use the new platform to train machine learning algorithms. This will ensure that the satellite networks that they are planning will perform in the way they are expecting. All this before they launch a single satellite.

The more the merrier

So, the company is partnering up with companies in the space industry so that it services can provided to industry right here on Earth. One of the biggest partners, of course, is Elon Musk’s SpaceX. This deal is going to provide Microsoft with access to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network for its Azure Modular cloud computing Datacenter. These MDC are actually pretty cool. They are self-contained data-centers that have the ability to be transported just about anywhere. Microsoft’s various clients that need these services require this kind of flexibility. An MDC can run in harsh conditions and in the most challenging of environments.

Microsoft mentioned that it will help customers in the industry with projects both on and off-world:

Our approach helps to address the some of the toughest technology challenges that our customers face in space: dealing with the vast amount of data generated from satellites, bringing cloud services and bandwidth to the most remote locations, and designing highly complex space systems. Coupled with our ecosystem of partners than can help bring this data to ground faster, we’re making it easier to find insights and make connections that weren’t possible before.

We are ready to support customers on their space missions off and on the planet, and to use the power of cloud and space technology to help business across industries re-imagine solutions to some of the world’s most challenging problems.

US Voters

Twitter is asking US voters to vote a bit sooner than usual, and the company is telling people how to do just that. Starting yesterday, users of Twitter in the United States started to see a message that asks them to vote ahead of schedule. The message is accompanied with information from BallotReady, which is apparently a non-partisan organization. Also, the social media titan is asking users to retweet how to vote early to their followers.

Extra bells and whistles for US voters

In addition to these things, US Voters can also use the hashtags #IVoted, #VoteEarly, #IVotedEarly and/or #YoVoté, when they tweet, and Twitter will add a custom emoji and a special animated like button. Lastly, Twitter is sending users notifications that will send you to an Public Service Announcement that has more early voting information.

Related post: Telegram, WhatsApp, and Signal turn out to be very insecure

The had recently took steps to fight the spread of misinformation regarding the election. Twitter had issued warnings and then applied restrictions to people promoting misleading tweets. A few days ago, Twitter started making it hard to retweet in general. It brought users to a quote tweet prompt before they could proceed. Twitter says it will ‘continue to share reminders with voting deadlines and resources’ all the way to election day.

It’s good that Twitter is taking steps to help US Voters because well, trump sure isn’t. FYI, that name was intentionally left un-capitalized. Why even bother giving the man that much respect. The clown-president has already basically murdered 200,000 current actual once-living Americans. The conspiracy-theorist-in-chief has made us look like fools to the rest of the world in the process. He has systematically robbed our children’s children’s of their future by changing important environmental and economic regulations. All for the sole purpose of achieving some sick, incomplete sense of glory.

Apple’s making its new iPhone power adapter and EarPods a little cheaper. The computer pioneer officially confirmed that it’s latest iPhones will wont come with the usually included accessories. Now, the company has its Lightning-connected EarPods and the all-new 20 Watt iPhone A/C adapter on the Apple Store for just $19 bucks. That’s $10 off the normal price of both of those.

We have long heard that the new iPhones won’t be coming with EarPods chargers anymore. And well, that turned out to be true. This doesn’t come as a surprise, considering the fact that Apple has been shipping it’s Watches without all along. Apple said that they made this choice for environment reasons. When it announced the iPhone 12, Apple took the time to prepare it’s customers, explaining that shipping without accessories would reduce its products’ manufacturing needs.

Apple has mentioned before that a great many of it’s customers have already switched to wireless earbuds, anyway. So, the company removing that accessory in particular will allow Apple to ship its devices a lot easier without having to worry about getting too much flack for it. You have to consider the sheer number of iPhones the company ships to customers. Tiny savings, and their environmental impacts, add up. So, officially, the iPhone 11, XR and SE, will ship without EarPods and chargers. This really isn’t too much to be concerned with. This is not too much to worry about. Chargers are cheap and besides, you have to replace them regularly anyway.

A quality mic is critical in the event that you are trying to attract an audience. The expense, notwithstanding, and huge range of devices to browse through may end up being a difficult choice. With that in mind, Razer is betting that it can make excellent mics more accessible. RAZR recently released the Seiren Mini USB microphone. The company claims that it is a ‘studio-grade’ mic. It’s tiny, at only 6.42 inches tall, and it’s price isn’t much larger. It’s just $50.

Razer’s USB Mini mic isn’t as state-of-the-art as it’s other Seiren branded microphones, but it does, however, have a high-quality supercardioid pickup to provide increased frequency response and noise reduction. Also, the Seiren mini has a 14mm condenser that provides ‘crisp and accurate’ sound. The mic also has built-in shock absorbing to help dampen out those pesky vibrations.

Razer arguably makes some of the best PC peripherals that you can find. So, it’s nice to see these guys produce another low cost, high performance device. Keeping consistent with Razer design, the Seiren Mini microphone is visually appealing. Razer nearly meets Apple’s quality standards in terms of hardware fit and finish. The company utilizes an extraordinary attention to detail when designing their products.

COVID-19 Comorbid

We are all still learning about the coronavirus.COVID-19 Comorbid risk is a serious issue. Scientists are still gathering data on just how it affects people outside the realms of infectious disease. This is very important to study.

If you would like, take a look at this collection of insights that were gathered by HCPLive. It should provide a little better insight on COVID-19’s burden on those that have it.

Kidney disease might actually make COVID-19 worse

A Yale professor, Alan S. Kilger, talked about the many difficulties that different patients with kidney disease have to deal with when they have COVID-19.

We know that chronic kidney disease patients, including dialysis patients, are more likely to become infected. ‘And we know if infected they have a substantially worse prognosis than people without kidney disease.

Alan S. Kilger

These people are at over twice the COVID-19 Comorbid. This is because their immune systems are impaired. This is really important to think about. Dialysis isn’t exactly conducive to social distancing.

As The Pandemic Progressed, so Have Opioid-Related Overdoses

Social isolation, depression, and anxiety are among the factors that have caused a marked increase in overdoses and deaths among people addicted to opioids.

Paul Christo, a professor of anesthesiology and critical care at Johns Hopkins, said the United States will potentially surpass 2019’s overdose related death rates. The public health and issues with society due to COVID-19 are the driving forces.

I think that once we get a vaccine—which hopefully will come soon—we will see fewer opioid overdoses and fewer overdoses related to drugs.

Paul Christo

Remote Psychiatry Has Been Improved Due to COVID-19

Scientists are starting to see that social distancing and lockdowns have incentivized the use, practice, and efficacy of telemedicine in the field of psychiatry.

Michael R Liebowitz, a psychiatry professor at Columbia University, suggested that people in need of mental health have found it much more accessible than before the never-ending virus.

We have no idea how long this is going to last and we don’t really have a clear idea of what it’s going to be like when we come out of this and how much we come out of this. There are some potential benefits that could come out of this as well.

Michael Liebowitz

Google is re-branding its productivity suite in an attempt to cater more to individuals who work remotely. First it was called Google Apps, then it got rebranded to G Suite. Now, G Suite is being rebranded to Google Workspace. It comes with a fresh logo and branding but that’s really all. The motive, here, is to make it clear to the average person that this is a place where you can get your work done.

Google Workspace complete rebrand

Gmail, and all the other applications in Google productivity suite is getting a new logo. In the rebrand for Google Workspaces, the Gmail envelope is now being switched-out for a new colorful M. The shift in the logo is supposed to represents some of the changes that Google made to the service earlier in the year. Things like video conversations and real-time chat were integrated into the system. Also, Google has underscored its improvement in regards to collaboration.

The search giant is attempting to get a few steps ahead of its competition. There are other services from the likes of Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and even Facebook that Google faces competition from in this segment. So, the plan is for Google to integrate its Meet video conferencing directly into its popular Docs, Sheets and Slides applications. This is an attempt to give you fewer reasons to a competing platform.

Sometimes organizations need to do a rebrand to shake the public up. Even when nothing changes but the logo graphics, this can help drive user adoption. This makes sense, if you think about it. People often forget what tools they have at their disposal. You can consider this rebrand to Google Workspaces a friendly reminder. Remember, Gmail has been around for about a decade, now. So, a rebranding can do it (and its associated tools) some justice in the public eye. Google already has a great set of tools that many people use, so don’t think the rebrand to Google Workspace is going to hurt anything.

The Zeiss ZX1 was first announced in 2018. It had Adobe Lightroom and a bunch of other unusual features. Now, suddenly, the ZX1 is on B&H Photo for pre-order with a $6,000 asking price. Two years later.

Pre-order current-old current-expensive

Despite it’s 2 year old age, the Zeiss ZX1 has highish-end specs for being such a small device. The camera has a 37.4-megapixel sensor, a 35mm Zeiss Distagon F/2 lens, and a 255-point autofocus system. It’s also got a 4.3-inch 720P display that you can run Adobe Lightroom CC on. The thing is, you will need a subscription if you want to share the photos you edited on your camera to your desktop. The Zeiss ZX1 has Bluetooth, WiFi, and a USB-C port for transferring and uploading your files.

Zeiss ZX1

That all sounds alright, other than having to pay a monthly fee to be able to use images from your $6,000 camera. But hey, you bought this camera, so money doesn’t matter to you anyway. The market demand is not all that clear. The Zeiss ZX1 is a somewhat exotic-looking, full-frame compact camera that costs $6000. In contrast, the Sony RX1 was $3000 and considered ludicrously expensive. That was in 2015. Also, Leica’s Q2 has a 47-megapixel full-frame sensor and costs $5,000. These options make the Zeiss ZX1 less attractive.

The Zeiss ZX1 won’t be a hit

This camera is an extra-costly device that more than likely won’t get purchased all that often. It uses expensive, old technology and there’s just something about paying $6000 for a device that you cannot fully use without a monthly subscription fee that just really bothers me. I won’t be alone in that sentiment.

We will know more about the Zeiss ZX1 shortly. B&H hasn’t specified an exact release date, and the popular video hardware store is closed for holidays until October 11th.

Compared to its predecessor, the new Razr is a big upgrade. 5G-support was not the only thing that Motorolla added to the updated handset. Motorola confirmed that its revised foldable phone will be available for purchase on October 2nd. When that time comes, you’ll be able to buy one from either B&H Photo & Video, Best Buy, Amazon, and Motorola’s own site. The price of the device is a steep $1,200, but hey, that’s $200 cheaper than the phone the (new) new Razr is replacing. You can also get the device through GSM carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T.

While Supplies Last

That discount, though, is temporary. It serves to makes the new Razr more approachable to those that may be on the fence about embracing foldable phones this early in the game. The Snapdragon 710 used in the first Razr has been replaced by the much more capable Snapdragon 765G. The device has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of NAND flash storage. That is literally twice as much storage as the original Razr. Also new in the device is a new 48-megapixel camera, more updated flexible software, and of course, sub-6 5G support.

Remember, you are paying a lot for the fact that this phone is foldable. You won’t that much of a difference in performance between this phone and one that costs around $800. Then again, that $800 can’t fold up and fit in your pocket comfortably. And besides, the new Motorola Razr is less about ‘powerful’ and more about ‘premium’. Think quality over quantity.

Dell’s new 13-inch XPS lineup is getting a well-deserved upgrade. The popular line of laptops are now paired with Intel’s 11th-generation chips. This latest version of Dell’s XPS 13, XPS 13 Developer Edition, and XPS 13 2-in-1 are the first Dell laptops that have managed to get Intel Evo certified. To be an Evo-certified laptop, the machine must support fast charging, at least a 9-hour battery, and it has to be able to wake from sleep in less than 1 second.

The new Intel Evo certification really does sound like a nice set of standards for a laptop to have. This reminds me of the Ultrabook initiative that Intel started about a while ago. The Ultrabook standard made the difference between the clunky, thick laptops of yesteryear and today’s slim, cutting edge machines. So yea, this Evo certification thing is going to make these 13-inch XPS laptops that much more appealing.

These new Dell laptops have full support for Thunderbolt 4 and include upgradable system memory. Another thing, this new 11-gen Intel-powered platform supports memory speeds ranging from DDR4 3733MHz to DDR4 4267MHz. The total amount of RAM these systems can support is 32GB. So, that means you can have up to 32GB RAM in a laptop at speeds of over 60GB per second. On the GPU front, the new 13-inch XPS 13 2-in-1 and XPS 13 offer Intel Xe graphics as well. The XP3 13 Developer Edition lacks this feature. The 2-in-1 convertable comes with an IR (Infrared) depth-sensing camera that supports Windows Hello. The convertible starts at $1,249, and the standard 13-Inch XPS 13 begins at $999.

13-inch XPS laptops

The 13-Inch XPS Developer Edition

The Developer Edition comes with Linux preinstalled, and Dell is estimating that the system will yield a battery life of almost 19 hours. The Linux distribution that’s installed on the 13-inch XPS Developer Edition laptop is Ubuntu 20.04LTS. This laptop also has an updated version of Dell’s InfinityEdge FHD+ display, but we don’t know how much it will cost just yet.

You will be able to purchase these devices in the US and Canadian markets on the 30th of September. After that, Dell is planning on launching a 13-inch XPS model that features a frost machined aluminum finish and an ‘arctic white’ woven glass palm rest. Dell will, however, be selling all three of these systems in limited European and Asian markets sometime in the next couple weeks.

Scientists say that they may have found evidence that confirms that a large mass of liquid water is present just under the surface of Mars. The original discovery of the underground lakes was in 2018. The team of researchers thinks that they may have found three more subsurface saltwater lakes near the main one they just found. This is a massive discovery. These underground lakes could be habitats for life. This is not a new finding. The first finding was met with tons of skepticism. This is because they were based on only 29 observations from 2012 to 2015. This finding, on the other hand, is based on 134 observations that happened between 2012 and 2019. So, this is a different story. The is less to doubt.

Seeing Underground Lakes With Sound

The scientists made use of data obtained from a radar device that is located on the ESA’s (European Space Agency) Mars Express spacecraft. The main function of the radar device is to investigate Mar’s southern polar region. MARSIS, the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere instrument, can send out radio waves that then bounce off a planet’s surface. Different materials reflect the waves differently. Underground lakes here on Earth are found the same way.

When scanning an area of about 30,000 square miles, the team of researchers found areas that indicate the presence of water under a half-mile of ice. So, for an idea of scale: The main lake 19 miles wide. It was the one discovered back in 2019. These three smaller lakes near it are just a few miles across.

This Doesn’t Mean There’s Life

These findings of underground lakes are definitely cool and all, but there is still some doubt as to whether there is life there or not. Many think that we won’t find lakes on Mars at all. Planetary scientist Jack Holt is one of them. He is a member of NASA’s MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter) program. Jack doesn’t think that the flow of heat under the surface is enough to keep water in liquid form. He says that even if we do find liquid water under the ice it doesn’t mean we will find life. The temperatures on Mars only make things worse for the prospect of life. The lakes that are there would need to be very salty to exist as a liquid. If it’s more than 5 times saltier than Earth’s ocean it won’t be able to support life.
