Ethernet is a system used to connect computers together. In fact, Ethernet is the most popular form of linking computers together. Not just desktop and laptop computers, but servers as well. Using an ethernet network, multiple computers can easily send data back and forth between eachother.

The most common way to connect to an ethernet cable these days is through a CAT5 or CAT6 cable that uses an RJ45 connector. RJ stands for ‘Registered Jack’ and 45 is the designation number of this type of connection:

The simplest kind of ethernet connection you can have with modern equipment is a 100mbit connection. For 100mbit, you only need 4 wires in the cable. The green pain and the orange pair:

For a gigabit connection, however, you will need to make sure you are using a cable that has the additional blue and brown pairs.
