China’s Sky Eye Telescope Will Soon Open to International Scientists [April 2021]

China will soon open its huge 1600-foot (500 meters) telescope to the international scientific community. This is scheduled to occur on April 1st of 2021, China’s ‘Sky Eye’ parabolic dish is the largest FAST (Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope in the world. These devices are used to detect things like pulsars and other astronomical objects. Also, the massive radio dish will be used to search for extraterrestrial life.

Scientists from countries all over the world are going to be able to submit their applications to China’s National Astronomical Observatories. After the application is reviewed, observation times will be portioned out beginning on August 1st. Somewhere around 10% or so of total observation time will be dedicated to global astronomers

The telescope will officially put into service on the 11th of January. Observations, however, have already begun. The huge dish has already images some 240 pulsars.

China’s Sky Eye is, by far, the world’s largest FAST telescope, and it’s the only one that can do the specific types of observational science that the Sky Eye can. This is due to the fact that the only other comparable instrument, the Arecibo Observatory radio telescope, fell to pieces. It may, however, be rebuilt as its host nation, Puerto Rico, pledged $8 million in aid to help try and fix it.
